Preemies Plus One

Did you know that November is National Preemie Awareness Month? In our world of special days and months celebrating everything from cheese to hula hoops, important awareness days/months often tend to get overlooked. Why is it important to call attention to premature births? Because the birthrate of a preemie is actually higher than you think at one in every ten pregnancies. According to the CDC "Preterm birth is a leading cause of infant mortality." And these babies that do survive may have short- and/or long-term health issues.

In our Itty Bitty Knits group, member Knittydaddy, himself a father of a preemie, and a member of the Executive Board of the Family Support Network of Central Carolina, hosts our monthly charity to collect preemie hats for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Women's Hospital in Greensboro, NC. It tends to be one of the more supported monthly charities, with many of us sending multiples of these little hats.

I'm certain we all know more lots of pre-term babies, but we don't often start our introductions with "Hi, I was a preemie". However, in the past couple of years, two recent births, one of a family member and another of my daughter's close friend, were both pre-term. Bringing this particular charity closer to home.

I should really knit more of these little hats throughout the year, but for now, this is what I've made:

The pink yarn is Ella Ray Cozy Soft, the multi-colored yarn was a small bit of Schoeller & Stahl Fortissima Stocka I had left and the random red is Berroco Comfort. Most of the little hats were knit with a pattern designed by Knittingdaddy himself, Scrappy Sock Yarn Preemie Hat, is available for purchase on Ravelry and all proceeds from the sale of the pattern is donated back to the FSNCC. He's made over $1,300 in donations so far from pattern sales, which is incredible!
